Good Morning this is WGHB in Dunedin Florida Yes, December 10, 1925 WGHB took the air with the first radio signals emanated from Pinellas County. A 500 watt transmitter allowed the broadcasts from the Fenway Hotel, recently purchased by George H. Bowles, to reach as far away as Canada and Alaska. Mr. Bowles hired Mr. Walter Tison to run the station and gave him the title of Director of Broadcasting.
The first program featured a Clearwater trio playing several selections on hand saws. These saws emitted notes resembling violins. This was followed by a real violin and piano combination, a couple of solo songs and then Miss Caroline Lee. Caroline was "The Virginia Girl" (assistant to Mr. Tison) sang to her own guitar accompaniment, and doubtlessly worked in her familiar claim: "Springtime all the time in Florida". The opening show featured 6 hours of assorted music.
Unfortunately, the Florida boom was crumbling and nobody was spared. The infusion of Bowles capital did not cure the Fenways' financial problems, and the radio station became an expensive and expendable luxury. In the spring of 1926, Mr. Bowles sold the station to St. Petersburg interests. Eventually, through several sales, the call letters were changed to WFLA, what the station is identified as today. You see, Dunedin played an important part in this areas broadcasting history.
THE BELLS ARE RINGING
Have you noticed how beautiful the chapel and chapel grounds look? If not, you need to come to the History Makers awards May 2nd. Our Chapel Coordinator, Jessica Nelson, has done a fantastic job with the grounds. The new brick walk is most welcoming and coupled with a new lamp post, walk lights and beautiful plantings make the ground a place to behold. Inside Jessica has redone the bathrooms, added a chandelier and new couch. Hers is a work of love and we are glad to have her.
Remember, if you know someone who has plans to tie the knot have them give Jessica a call at 271-9673. She is also selling commemorative bricks for our walk way. They really look great and what a wonderful way to celebrate a wedding or birth and what a great way to honor a loved one, family, spouse or friend.
