June 13, 1974: Gov. Askew appoints first female Cabinet member
Have you come a long way, baby? Gov. Reuben Askew announced the appointment of Florida's first female Cabinet member. Dorothy Glisson, state elections director for 20 years, will serve as Secretary of State, Askew announced. She succeeds Richard Stone, who resigned to run for Senate.

The governor followed his announcement by planting a big kiss on Mrs. Glisson's cheek. Not to be outdone, Stone, the man she is replacing, followed up with a full smooch on the lips.
And the Associated Press story reporting the announcement indicated that the idea of a woman at the top level of government was still a novelty. The story describes her as "a grey-haired woman who looks and acts like everyone's favorite aunt" and a few paragraphs later states that Mrs. Glisson "declines to reveal her age."
