Public invited to ribbon cutting and grand reopening of Lake County Historical Museum
RELEASE DATE: April 4, 2014
TAVARES —The Lake County Historical Society, in conjunction with the Tavares Chamber of Commerce, is inviting the public to a ribbon cutting and grand reopening ceremony of the Lake County Historical Museum at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 17.
Visitors will discover Walt Disney’s connection to Paisley, the people behind the names of Tavares’ most well-traveled roads, the muddled history of the federal government’s misspelling of Haynes Creek and why Lake County can truly claim the oldest Boy Scout troop in Florida.
The Lake County Historical Museum is located on the first floor of the Lake County Historic Courthouse at 317 W. Main St., Tavares. The building was erected in 1922, and in 1998 was placed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.
Curator, local historian and author Bobby Grenier has been fine-tuning the museum's exhibits over the past few months to help present the history of Lake County in an informative, creative and fun manner. Some of the museum’s exhibits include a tribute to Lake County’s veterans, a salute to black history and the new “Remember the Alamo” display, a 1/32 scale replica of the famous stand for Texas independence, with a touch of local flavor.
The museum is open Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. but extended hours are in the works. For group tours or more information, call 352-343-9890.
